Responding to members’ feedback requesting more time for networking, the event will start at 18:00. Our speaker is Club Member - Alan Batten of the European Space Agency. Click here for Alan’s CV and presentation synopsis. \"Future Mobility and Infrastructure - Galileo – Europe\'s Global Positioning and Navigation System\" is his theme for the evening. Alan has a masters degree in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge. After several years working in the defence industry he moved to the space industry in 1987 and was for many years based at ESA’s Operations Control Centre in Darmstadt. He has worked on a variety of spacecraft project ranging from complex astronomical missions , meteorological spacercraft and Earth Observation missions to his current role on Galileo. Why Europe needs Galileo The European Commission estimates that 6-7% of European GDP – around €800 billion – is already dependent on satellite navigation. Satellite positioning has become the standard way of navigating and many utility networks are also dependant on the precise time synchronisation provided by the satellite navigation systems. In the 1990s, the European Union saw the need for Europe to have its own global satellite navigation system. The decision to build one was taken in similar spirit to decisions in the 1970s to embark on other well-known European endeavours, such as the Ariane launcher and the Airbus. The European Commission and European Space Agency joined forces to build Galileo, an independent European system under civilian control. By placing satellites in orbits at a greater inclination to the equatorial plane than GPS, Galileo will achieve better coverage at high latitudes. This will make it particularly suitable for operation over northern Europe, an area not well covered by GPS With Galileo, Europe will be able to exploit the opportunities provided by satellite navigation to the full extent. | Bemerkung | The next meeting of the Anglo-Bavarian Club will take place together with the members of the Deutsch-Kanadische Gesellschaft , Region Oberbayern, for a lunch at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 12.00 o´clock The speaker on this occasion will be: Dr. Wolfgang Armbrecht, Leiter MINI Markenführung weltweit The title of this talk will be: “MINI – Markenführung der aufregendsten Automobilmarke der Welt” Wir freuen uns sehr, Ihnen das Thema MINI im Hinblick auf seine Markenhistorie, seine Geschäftsentwicklung und seiner Erfolgsfaktoren für den Erfolg auch in der Krise vorstellen zu können. MINI ist sowohl in Kanada als auch in seinem Ursprungsland UK stark vertreten und daher sowohl für die Mitglieder des ABC als auch denen der DKG sehr relevant. Dr. Wolfgang Armbrecht studierte Betriebswirtschaftslehre und Publizistik an der Technischen Universität Berlin und promovierte zum Doktor der Philosophie am Institut für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft der Universität Salzburg. Nach Funktionen im Personalwesen sowie Leitungsfunktionen in der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit der BMW Group und der Leitung des BMW Marketing Deutschland stieg er auf zum Leiter der weltweit größten BMW Niederlassung in München. Seit April 2008 ist Dr. Armbrecht Leiter der Markenführung von MINI und verantwortet damit den Absatz von über 230.000 MINI Automobilen. Wir danken den MINI Mitarbeitern Frau Romy Fischer sowie Herrn Jörg Dohmen (auch DKG-Mitglied) für die freundliche Unterstützung bei der Vorbereitung dieses Vortrags.
